Summit and I had a blast making her portrait with her father’s classic, blue Chevrolet truck! She has such a beautiful smile, I was smiling along with her the whole session. I knew as soon as I arrived at Summit’s beautiful home in Greenwich, Connecticut and saw her Daddy’s truck in their yard that I wanted to incorporate it into her portrait shoot. Summit’s dad grew up in Indiana where it is common to see older work trucks such as this one, however in the East Coast town of Greenwich they are not found often!

This session was shot with a Nikon D5000 and a manual focus 50mm f/1.8 AF lens.…

  • The 2015 Pet Calendar Contest is Underway!

I had a lot of fun today meeting most of the sponsors for this year’s 2015 Pet Calendar for The Santa Fe New Mexican! Laurie and Mira from Teca Tu-A Pawsworthy Pet Emporium showed me around their shop including the homemade cookie treats they have for sale! Sheri from Paws Plaza was very kind and introduced me to her adorable little pup Colby. Sylvie from Santa Fe Paws was a sweetheart and showed me all of her resources she has for pet owners! Then I grabbed a delicious calzone from Back Road Pizza, Yum! And finally I took a stroll around The Critters & Me and saw their amazing collection of pet supplies.
Santa Fe is surely lucky to have so many fantastic resources for pets!…

  • Congratulations to The Top 25 Contestants!

Round 1 of The Santa Fe New Mexican’s 2015 Pet Calendar has officially ended! Thank you to all who participated and congratulations to the Top 25! You will be hearing from me soon!…

  • Adobe Kuler | The Best App For Planning Your Family Portrait Session Wardrobe

Are you planning a family portrait session but are struggling with how to dress your family?

Read more to find the best kept secret in color coordination!

Back in college, I remember taking the fundamental art courses that were required for graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Most of these classes were designed to hone down one’s interest in becoming an artist and determine his or her desired area of focus. At the college I attended, these classes included Drawing I & II, 2-D Design, 3-D Design, and Color & Design. Color & Design was by far my favorite of these fundamental courses. I’m sure some of you are thinking, “How can there be an entire college course just on color??” This class was mainly about color theory, how people interpret colors and about which colors complement each other best. It was very interesting to learn about all of the colors in the spectrum, how colors make people feel and which colors the eye is likely to go to first. Ultimately, the course was very helpful and has benefited my career as a photographer substantially.

Now, am I suggesting you need to take a college level course on color to learn how to pick the best colors for your family portrait session? Of course not! This is one of the reasons you hire a professional!

You may already have a color scheme in mind for what to wear to your portrait session and if so, that’s great! If not, take a look around your home for some inspiration. It is best to think about where you would like to display your portrait session images in your home and coordinate with that area. I’m sure that, like most people, you have designed the rooms in your home to suit your family’s style and with that, chosen colors that you already love! So why not coordinate your outfits to match that style!

Here’s where a fabulous tool comes into play – it’s called Adobe Kuler.

Oh man, how I wish I knew about this tool when I was in college! Adobe Kuler, available online and as a smartphone app, is available for free and anyone can use it.

Adobe Kuler in the iTunes App Store

    Here’s how it works:

If you prefer to use the smartphone app, download it from the iTunes App Store. Once it has finished downloading, go to the room where you would love to display your family portraits. The app uses your iPhone’s camera in real time to display the colors around you in complimentary color shades. Once you find a set you love, tap on the screen to freeze the image and save it to your camera roll. You may also use an image from your camera roll that you have previously taken, if that works best for you.

Family Pet Portrait Photography Santa Fe New Mexico

If you prefer to use the online tool, use any camera to take a snapshot of the location of your choosing. Make sure there is plenty of natural light in the area so the colors show most accurately. Once you have a few photos of your space, go to the Adobe Kuler website. This tool is available even if you do not create an account, but I do suggest creating one because it is free to use and you can save your colors to view at a later time. On the homepage, look for the image of a camera. (see photo below) This will allow you to upload an image that you took and create a color palette based on your image. Be sure to check out the suggestions for colorful, bright, muted, deep and dark for even more ideas!

Family Pet Portrait Photography Santa Fe New Mexico

Now that you have a color scheme picked out, head to your closets and find what matches best. And if you don’t have clothes that fit your vision, well then I guess it’s time to do a little shopping! Oh darn another excuse to go shopping ;-)

Then give me a call and tell me how excited you are about finding the perfect outfits for your family to wear to their portrait session. Trust me, I will be just as excited as you will be!…

I could just not get enough of little Chama after our shoot with the biscuits tin last week! So here is round two! She is such a bundle of joy and it was so much fun to see life through her eyes as she clumsily stumbled around the yard. Watching her little nose sniff through the air and through the flower beds just made me smile at all the little wonders of the world. And my heart just melted when she would suddenly stop wandering, turn around and wobble back towards me just to sit at my feet.…

I would like you to meet Ms. Christine Summer! Christine won my contest for being the 500th person to like my Facebook business page!  Christine is an adorable Sophomore at Belen High School, in Belen, New Mexico. Christine is involved in cheerleading, gymnastics, modeling, mixed martial arts & acting and man is she adorable! I had a great time with Christine and her mom today on our shoot in Old Town in Albuquerque. We enjoyed wandering around Old Town and finding fun, colorful places to take her portrait. I loved the way the stucco walls, the bright colorful decorations and her beautiful glitzy dress went perfectly together! Christine and I clicked instantly and she didn’t even laugh at me too hard when I accidentally sat on a cactus to get “the perfect shot”!

This is the Mock family of Greenwich, Connecticut. The family wanted a memorable photo shoot with their lovable 13 year old Weimaraner named Barley to capture how much he means to the whole family. The black and white contrast in these images is simply stunning and represents the modern city feel in their home. The four siblings were so much fun to photograph and are unbelievably photogenic! The candid shot of the oldest daughter with Barley is one of my favorites from this session and genuinely shows the relationship this family shares with their dog.…

“Hello! Hello! Hi! Hey! How are you?! Hello!” You would have thought I was a little nuts if you heard what I was saying during my session with Ashley and her adorable mini-goldendoodle pup Cupcake! Ashley moved to Santa Fe this year just like I did and she’s easily one of the nicest women you will ever meet! When she’s not in front of my camera, Ashley is the extremely creative owner of Darte Collections, a Artisanal Design company that features Handcrafted Gifts and Home Decor! Check her out on Etsy also! Cupcake is a charming puppy with a TON of energy! The thing that finally captured Cupcake’s attention enough to get some darling photos of her was saying “Hello!” Not just once but over and over with as much energy as possible! Well it worked because I could not be happier with these photographs! Thank you Ashley and Cupcake for letting me into your home and letting me make some wonderful memories with you!

I had a ton of fun with Erin and her 4 year old black labrador Boo Radley on our pet photography shoot last Friday! Erin is new to Santa Fe just like me! She grew up in Pennsylvania but recently spent some years in Alaska! Erin and Boo both have amazing personalities and I loved how Erin had such good ideas for her and Boo’s session. We started on the Rail Trail in Santa Fe for some of Boo Radley’s photos and he loved all the attention he was getting! After that we went back to their home where Boo Radley showed me his toys and his favorite cuddle spots! Finally Erin and I went downtown Santa Fe and found some great photo spots. All over such a fun day!…

Cody wore me out at our session the other day in Greenwich, Connecticut! Cody is a 3 year old Chocolate Labrador Retriever with a TON of energy! We had fun running around his backyard and he showed me his favorite backyard toy, his swing. He loved grabbing ahold of the bottom of the rope and playing tug-of-war with the gigantic tree. It took some persuading to get his attention away form the swing but thankfully I had some string cheese in my pocket, his favorite treat. Cody was such a well behaved pup and we got some great shots!…

When I was at my mother’s in Connecticut this past week, I took the opportunity to get some pet portraits of our lovable Bichon Frise, Ellie! Her name is “Ellie” she has an abundance of nicknames such as “Ellie Bells”, “Belly”, “Bubby”, and many more! Back on July 4th, 2006, two of my good friends and I drove from our home in Saline, Michigan, to Akron, Ohio, to pick up this adorable pup from a local breeder. She has made a fantastic addition to our family and even though she is completely spoiled and acts like a total princess, we love her unconditionally. We just can’t get enough of our snuggly pups!…

  • Loco Dog & Cooper | Family Portrait Photographer Santa Fe, New Mexico

I had a fun morning with these two knuckleheads at their home here in Santa Fe. These two pups are the sweetest and act like real brothers! Loco Dog is a 2 year old purebred Black Lab with tons of energy and Cooper is a 1 year old Rottweiler sheep dog mix with an adorable ear that stays straight up! They loved running around in their back yard and Loco Dog even went diving in their play pool for a small block to play with. By the end of our session these two cuties were exhausted from all the fun we had!…

  • Madrid, New Mexico | Travel Photographer Santa Fe, New Mexico

Yesterday we went on such a cool adventure! We traveled to Madrid, New Mexico, which is only about 35 minutes away from Santa Fe, but it was almost like we had traveled to a foreign place! Madrid is an old coal mining town that had its own coal-fed power plant. In the 1920s, every home in Madrid was wired for electricity and nationwide it became known for it famous Christmas lights. After WWII ended, the demand for coal diminished and the town became a ghost town by 1959. After a few years the town owner rented a few of the miner’s cabins to rugged individuals, artists and craftsmen eager to make a home in the mountains of New Mexico. Now the town has a population of about 300 and is a fun artsy community with wonderful galleries and fun sites to see.

Our first stop in town was the Mine Shaft Tavern which is home to the Old Coal Town Museum. The museum was recently renovated in 2012 but after a recent storm the museum suffered a ton of damage from flooding and landslides. It still has some damage but it gives the museum a cool effect. Tickets are only $5 a person, you should go check it out sometime!

When I got home I checked out the museum’s website, and I am so glad I did! There are a lot of old photographs of the museum as well as ghost stories from paranormal associations. I believe in ghosts and I got the feeling we were not the only ones in the museum when we were in there, but I’m glad I hadn’t seen these articles before I went there or I might not have gone in! Check out these articles here.…

  • Rosie the Sweet Pitbull | Family Portrait Photographer Santa Fe, New Mexico
